Documentary essay exploring the many ways of living and affirming Black identity in the United States. Through the metaphor of gumbo, a dish made from the combination of different ingredients, Riggs challenges fixed definitions of Blackness and brings together voices such as Angela Davis, bell hooks and Essex Hemphill to reflect on gender, sexuality, class and belonging. A portrait of the diversity of Black experiences and the freedom to build plural identities.
