Matinés do Cineclube
Matinés do Cineclube

With a desire to rekindle a connection going back to the 1940s, Batalha has invited Cineclube do Porto to revive the matinée format that for decades was a mainstay at the cinema. This new programme interprets the history and role of the Cineclube for the city and country from its foundation through to today.

Every two weeks on Sundays, we will dedicate a session to a key moment in the life and operation of the oldest film club in Portugal. These screenings are introduced by members of the Cineclube who will reveal the relevance of each chosen film to the history of the institution.

In December, Cineclube continues with its retrospective series America… America…, focussed on a booming period in independent American cinema. In January, we present a special session marking the 30th anniversary of the first ever Portuguese-Angolan film co-production. February sees a revival of the famous European Cinema Week, originally organised in the 1990s. This showcase involved the screening of works by first-time directors or which were not shown widely in national cinemas at the time. In addition to this selection of films, Cineclube will screen other titles missing from the original programme, which, from today’s perspective, have gained new significance, justifying their inclusion in the new programme.
