Pearl (Jennifer Jones), an orphaned daughter of a Native American woman and an adventurer, moves to the ranch of Laura Belle (Lillian Gish), a woman with whom her father had a romantic affair years earlier.

The young woman’s arrival at the ranch will pit the two McAndles brothers, Lewt (Gregory Peck) and Jesse (Joseph Cotten), against each other in a fight to the death for her love.
