The repertoire brings popular elements to the symphonic stage. Thus, Hispanic-Cuban rhythms mark Chabrier’s Habanera, the intensity of flamenco runs through Rodrigo’s famous Concerto de Aranjuez, while Brazilian choro and modinha are present in Villa-Lobos’ Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra. In a national premiere, and using an electric guitar, Sean Shibe also plays a concerto by Mark Simpson, Zebra, a fascinating work that represents a new phase in the relationship between contemporary classical music and popular culture.
