Crossing a border is an act charged with motivations, a movement that exposes the complex dynamic in which, while capital circulates without barriers, human bodies continually renegotiate their passage and their right to space. The result of a collaboration between Espaço Parede and Lab_Boa, the exhibition Foreign Land / Cartographies of the Gaze, curated by Ale Griot, brings together glimpses and visual poetics from artists originating from Ukraine, Brazil, Lithuania, and Romania.
Moving away from stereotypes or romanticized views, the exhibition investigates displacement as a process of disorganization and transformation of the individual upon coming into contact with a new territory. Inspired by the perspective of Ursula K. Le Guin, who understands the border not merely as a line on a map, but as a threshold of transition and friction, the exhibition approaches the condition of the foreigner as a continuous state of translation, adaptation, and identity reconstruction. Between the sea, light, color, and artistic material, the works trace new personal and collective cartographies, celebrating the utopia of a new beginning as a courageous affirmation of the right to preserve one's own story and reinvent the way of inhabiting the world.
