For the artists represented in the MNSR's long-term exhibition, being a woman was not a limiting condition to their affirmation and recognition in a world of mostly male domination. The works, experiences and journeys of these artists, born between the 17th and 20th centuries, are the starting point for a visit that is rounded off with poetry signed by women who lived at the same time, in similar circumstances.
Through the contemplation of pieces by Josefa d'Óbidos, Francisca de Almeida Furtado, Maria da Glória Ribeiro, Sofia and Aurélia de Souza, Sarah Afonso and Irene Vilar and the circumstances in which they worked, a connection is made to poets such as Soror Maria do Céu, Antónia Pusich, Marta Câmara, Judith Teixeira, Maria O'Neil, Maria Osswald and Sophia de Mello Breyner.
