Hèctor Parra's new orchestral work focuses on the great legacy of surrealist painter Joan Miró, the Constellations cycle: paintings on paper, created around 1940, in a terrifying context in which fascism dominated Spain and conquered Europe. There are three pieces that navigate between the anguish of an uncertain future and the need for affirmation. Another art form, poetry, gave rise to Mahler's Rückert-Lieder cycle, composed in the early 20th century. In the award-winning voice of mezzo-soprano Eva Zaïcik, the Symphony explores this work full of lyricism, an example of the best that has been written for voice and orchestra. The program is completed with an essential score from the last century, Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10, oscillating between shadows and agitation, suggesting sometimes devastated landscapes, sometimes triumphant freedom.
