For as long as theatre exists, there are stories about brothers at war. This one, however, is different from all others because it was written by Sam Shepard (1943-2017), the multi-award-winning American author of more than half a hundred plays, also a director and actor. True West (1980), which in Pedro Galiza’s translation cleverly becomes Veroeste, is the story of Austin, a relatively successful screenwriter in search of his first big triumph in Hollywood, and Lee, his older brother, a drifter and petty thief. Both come to accidentally share their mother’s house, while she is vacationing in Alaska. Forced to live together in the same place, and instigated by dark family memories and a mix of aversion, envy and resentment, the brothers allow themselves to be dragged into an almost deadly duel, in the middle of the American West. Outwardly, coyotes howl and night falls. Veroeste is directed by Pedro Quiroga Cardoso and it is ASSéDIO Teatro’s first foray into Sam Shepard’s work.
