A relentless saxophonist with vital energy for various movements in this and other cities, Pedro Sousa is recognized as having a rare and natural ability to inhabit and confuse different musical spheres, which, in its passage through jazz in various forms, through the most risky electronics, through biased rock and improvisations without name or place, never loses the personal heritage and stamp of the most honest and nonconformist. |Born in 1986 in Lisbon, Pedro Sousa graduated in sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, between 2005 and 2009. He started playing music at 17, and gave his first concert at 19. Playing electric guitar and electronics, he was a founding member of OTO – an improvised electronic music trio, with its debut concert in 2008 at the Serralves Institute. Currently, he presents his work mainly as a saxophonist, also branching out into other areas such as composition and production, photography, sculpture, installations and performance. In addition to participating in music under his own name, he founded bands such as Má Estrela, EITR, Rajada, Falaise, Canzana, Betas, Espaço Emocional, OTO, a quartet with which he maintains close collaboration (João Lencastre, Rodrigo Pinheiro and Hernani Faustino) and several duos, such as with David Maranha and Simão Simões. He is also the co-founder of Casa Futuro, Peter Gabriel Duo, Ferrandini-Sousa-Pinheiro trio, Pão and Performance Colectiva (Gabriel Ferrandini, Maria Reis, Rudi Brito, André Cepeda). He also participates in several bands, such as Caveira, Volúpias das Cinzas and Serpente.
Having collaborated with names such as Evan Parker, RP Boo, Phil Niblock, Sei Miguel, Rafael Toral, Mão Morta, Alexander Von Schlippenbach, Thurston Moore, Johan Berthling, Peter Evans, Marching Church, Glockenwise and Black Bombaim, Pedro Alves Sousa presents a variety of influences and complementarities that go from drone to electronic music (in its most varied forms), from rock to traditional music, from experimental to improvisation, bringing everything together in a continuum that is the search for a discourse and language of its own.
