LIÇO: a reaver o fio à meada

“A reaver o fio à meada” is a project by the interdisciplinary collective LIÇO - Beatriz Lerer Castelo, Diana Gil, Mariana Anacleto, Teresa Costa, Vera Morais. In the form of a performance installation, we explore the intersection between woollen crafts and vocal singing, emphasising the role of women in both arts. In Portuguese heritage, we see these two artistic expressions as inseparable, and this is the approach manifested in the performance: the various layers of sound - the dripping water of freshly washed wool, the sound of cards, wheels and looms - intertwine in counterpoint with our voices, sometimes singing about women's work and wool, sometimes improvising melodic lines from the textile lines, and vice versa. Over the course of "a whole day", as the lines of the songs intersect with the lines of the textile patterns, we find in this immersive setting a place that seeks to serve as a catalyst for collective endeavour, which brings us closer to the women who preceded us through gesture and voice. This work was developed during a residency at CURA - A Música Portuguesa a Gostar dela Própria's space.
