Internet Folklore is the practice of collective myth-making across digital platforms, which harkens back to pre-modern forms of communication, where information was communal, collaborative, and immediate. A study on online culture, emerging technologies – from AI to quantum computing – and the myths embedded within those systems, this artist talk charts the emergence of folklore as a primary lens to understand a new era of digital communication, where second-order oral tradition has sparked a wave of digital mythologies that inform the way we see ourselves and our surroundings. Yalcinkaya traces how this complex lattice of online culture gives rise to new ideologies, digital superstitions and collective fantasies – in particular, how pre-modern image traditions can help us navigate visual culture in an era of AI slop, and beyond.
