Carlo Maria Broschi, known by the pseudonym Farinelli, was a famous 18th-century castrato, the highest-paid opera singer in Europe at the time. With a clear and powerful voice, he sang on stages and at courts (including the Portuguese court) and, for almost a decade, was in the service of Philip V of Spain, whose deep melancholy was alleviated by the songs that the lyric singer sang to him night after night. In 1994, director Gérard Corbiau decided to tell Farinelli’s story in a film, a work that earned him a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film and an Oscar nomination. Under the artistic direction of Huw Daniel, the Baroque Orchestra accompanies the screening of the film in the Sala Suggia, performing its extraordinary original soundtrack.
