It’s rare for the 17th century to reach us in première, but on 7 June, the Igreja de S. Bento da Vitória hosts a programme of music from the Mosteiro de Santa Cruz de Coimbra composed around 1650, with psalms receiving their modern première.
In this annotated concert, the repertoire is performed by Sesquialtera, an ensemble specialising in 15th- and 16th-century music from ESMAE’s Early Music programme, and the Coral de Letras da Universidade do Porto, under the direction of Hugo Sanches. The musical edition is by José Abreu and Hugo Sanches and the choir is prepared by Pedro Guedes Marques.
Research brought it back and performance brings it to life, in one of the city’s most iconic churches.
