"Throughout my musical career as a bassist and sideman, composition has always been a present and essential element for me to be able to express myself as a whole. Over the last 18 years I've had the opportunity to lead and publish, with small groups, 9 albums of original music that express my roots, experiences and the complicity I've created with musicians from this country.
I've never felt what I feel with this group, a depth and cohesion that is rare in jazz. Under my name, the group has existed for four years, but we've been making music together for more than 15 years, in the context of the Matosinhos jazz orchestra and beyond, which means that there's an understanding that comes from instinctive perception, and there's also a lot of respect, trust and admiration. Each member has a strong musical voice and a vision that adds richness to my music and combined the result is pure magic.
This is another project that I think is artistically ambitious, challenging the musicians to move and create in a context far beyond the sphere of traditional jazz, moving between the folklore of Argentina and chamber music.
Rooted in North American jazz, the group's philosophy is based on interaction and spontaneous construction, sometimes respecting the structures of the compositions and sometimes not. They are not afraid to explore abstract territories and landscapes typical of dodecaphonism. Freedom is the group's primary element and the aim is to imprint the music with the personalities of each musician.
What I value most in music is when there is a strong, personal musical proposal, from composition to interpretation, and I think that's what you hear in this group."
Demian Cabaud - Double bass
João Grilo - Piano
João Pedro Brandão - Saxophone
José Pedro Coelho - Saxophone
Marcos Cavaleiro - Drums
