The artistic research of Mariana Barrote (1986, Fão, Portugal) unfolds primarily through drawing, painting, video, and small objects, articulated in the construction of visual narratives and poetics. The different media she employs allow drawing, as a matrix, to expand transdisciplinarily, enhancing the heterogeneous character of each of these forms of expression and reflection.
Filled with primitive, carnal, and symbolic allusions, her practice refers to the human body, often anatomically disfigured by excessive movement, through figures that inhabit her works as visual metaphors, the result of a process marked by formal and material experimentation.
In “Charme”, her second solo exhibition at Lehmann gallery, the captivating powers of the body are translated into images that spark corporeal imagination. The forms emerging in her work also seek a transfiguration of bodily morphology, expanding the territory of seduction, metamorphosis, and desire.
