On the occasion of the centenary of Ivan Illich's birth (1926–2002), we are holding the colloquium "One Hundred Years. No Plans.", on 15 and 16 October, at FLUP and FBAUP (University of Porto).
The colloquium is the result of a joint organisation bringing together research centres from the University of Porto — the Institute of Sociology (IS-UP), the Institute of Philosophy (IF-UP) and CETAPS, from FLUP; the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE), from FPCEUP; and the Research Institute in Art, Design and Society (i2ADS), from FBAUP — as well as the Research Centre in Theology and Religious Studies (CITER) from the Portuguese Catholic University.
This gathering is the central event of a series of initiatives that have taken place throughout 2026 around Illich's work and legacy. Running alongside it, an exhibition at FBAUP will be open to the public, with its inauguration marking the closing of the colloquium on 16 October at 18h00, with a lecture-performance by Alexander Gerner.
The programme brings together researchers from several national and international institutions, with the participation of Thierry Paquot (Institut d'Urbanisme de Paris), Silja Samerski (Hochschule Emden/Leer), Jean-Pierre Dupuy (Stanford University), Benoît Sibille (Institut Catholique de Paris), Vincenzo Rosito (Pontificio Istituto Teologico Giovanni Paolo II, Rome) and John Baldacchino (University of Wisconsin-Madison).
