Three composers who have become symbols of symphonic music in their countries feature in this programme, conducted by acclaimed British conductor Andrew Gourlay. From Villa-Lobos, we have the Bachianas Brasileiras No. 8, a score composed for a large orchestra that gives an important role to percussion. From Maurice Ravel, we hear the hypnotic cycle of songs he composed under the spell of Scheherazade, the heroine and narrator of the famous Arabian Nights, represented here by the award-winning Portuguese singer Raquel Camarinha. The programme culminates with Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony, written to celebrate the composer’s 50th birthday, in which the famous swan theme resounds as an emblem of the Nordic soundscape.
