In stories, there are no boundaries. Animals can disguise themselves as humans and humans can turn into animals. A little girl can sail across the sea, wander through North Africa, traverse the Sahara desert, cross the Sahel and arrive at an unknown location, where talking trees grow. In Bonecos [Puppets], stories lead to further stories, in a journey through traditional African tales. Written by Jorge Louraço Figueira and staged by Quico Cadaval, the new creation by Red Cloud Teatro de Marionetas offers a live combination of “new” and “old” technologies, words and movement, music and film. Existing in a liminal space between tradition and contemporaneity, Bonecos is proof that “in order to understand the present it is necessary to go to the past and look for stories that had not come to us, that had not been told”.
