In 1975, due to the abandonment of the Western Sahara territory by the Spanish state (the administering power) and the invasion by Morocco, thousands of Sahrawis fled and arrived in southwestern Algeria, in a desert area near Tindouf.
The region is known as "hamada," and it is one of the driest deserts in the world.
Since then, approximately 200,000 people have been waiting for a solution to the conflict, living for decades in refugee camps and dependent on international humanitarian aid, while awaiting a self-determination referendum that will allow them to decide the future of their territory.
Summer arrives and conditions in the camps worsen due to high temperatures that can exceed 50º Celsius, and the lack of water. In this sense, we organized this benefit to support a Sahrawi family with 4 children to have access to basic needs, namely access to water.
To better understand the struggle of the Sahrawi people, their history, and the current context, we will be showing the documentary "Life in Suspended: The Referendum and Resistance in Western Sahara." Afterwards, we'll continue with a party, music, and dancing with Guaywey.
Come support and show your solidarity! 🇪🇭✌🏼
