We invite you to spend an afternoon discovering two movement languages deeply connected to the African diaspora: Afro Jazz and Authentic Jazz, with Edmilson Botelho.
Afro Jazz
Afro Jazz is Edmilson Botelho's artistic interpretation, inspired by the work of André Vasco and the Afro Swing movement—an approach created and developed by Mozambican dancers that blends Mozambique's traditional dances with Authentic Jazz.
Building on this inspiration, Edmilson has developed his own approach, rooted in the traditional dances of São Tomé and Príncipe while incorporating influences from Afro House, Kuduro, and other forms of contemporary African dance. The result is a movement language that honours its roots while creating new possibilities for expression through the body and music.
Authentic Jazz
Authentic Jazz (also known as Solo Jazz) is an African American dance form that emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, closely connected to the evolution of Jazz music and Black culture in the United States. It is characterised by improvisation, musicality, body isolation, and a strong connection to swing.
Throughout these workshops, we will explore some of the fundamental principles of these movement languages, working on coordination, groove, body awareness, and the relationship between different movement qualities. Through exercises and sequences, we will discover how the same movement can be shaped and transformed while remaining true to its essence.
Let's join hands and make it happen.
