In Porto, more and more art studios are opening their doors with artistic workshops for all audiences, where playing, learning, and experimenting are the order of the day. We visited four of these spaces that offer activities for adults, but also for children, families, and babies—ACASO Atelier Criativo, Base. Atelier cowork, DoBarro, and Oficina Josefina. And with Christmas just around the corner, there will be workshops related to this festive season.
“I know very well that in everyone's childhood there was a garden, /Private or public, or belonging to a neighbor. / I know very well that we were its owners when we played there.” The verses of Álvaro de Campos' poem Dobrada à Moda do Porto remind us that outdoor play should be a right for all children. And that is what the Serpentina movement, which is taking to the streets, is calling for: Porto as a green, gentle, free, and lively city. In this edition, we combine the verb “to play” with the co-creators of this project, Patrícia Costa and Maria João Macedo.
In Porto is in the eye of the beholder, we went to see Toque de Letra at Bombonera, the Porto-based discussion group project “cooked up” by journalist Pedro Cadima and his friend João Pedro, historian and creator of the Facebook page Enciclopédia do Desporto em Português (Encyclopedia of Sport in Portuguese), and we discovered that “more broken” football goes well with punk rock.
