On 4 October, Porto celebrates two decades of one of the most unique projects in Portuguese music. M.Ou.Co. was the venue chosen for this concert-party.

Paulo Zé Pimenta, better known as PZ, puts on his pyjamas to celebrate 20 years of a winding journey, which has not always been spent celebrating. When he arrived in Portugal after studying New Media Arts in Boston, he felt adrift and fell into depression. "I had been making music at home since I was very young; when trip hop and techno came along, with the help of a synthesiser, I was already able to do a few things. So, when I was feeling lost, my family encouraged me: make music!‘ This encouragement gave rise to the song ’Sofá Efervescente", which ended up being the first single from the album Anticorpos (2005).

‘The album was my therapy,’ says PZ. ‘I've always loved music, my father took me to big concerts when I was younger; he took me to concerts by Nirvana, David Bowie, Madonna and Michael Jackson. At home, we listened to music at dinner, my brother also studied music. And my most creative side has always been revealed through music.’

The first album was released on the label that PZ founded with his brother, Meifumado Fonogramas, but concerts and public performances only began in 2012 with the second album, Rude Sofisticado, which featured the song ‘Croquetes’. ‘When Nuno Markl heard the songs on this album, he shared them, and that's when I felt that people started listening to my music. I was in a good phase, happy with life, and the music of “Croquetes” had some success.’

With the release of the second album, he began giving concerts, making music videos, and the project began to become more serious. "I remember D'Bandada, that big music festival in Porto, it was almost like a São João festival just for music; and I gave a concert at Casa do Livro, and it was amazing! A lot of people showed up. I was surprised because people already knew a lot of the songs, and that's when I thought that maybe I could try a career in music," reveals the musician, who wears pyjamas and slippers during his live performances.

“Pyjamas are a symbol of carefreeness,” says PZ. “One day, I started recording an album in my pyjamas, in front of the camera, at three in the morning, and Alexandre Azinheira, the director of the ‘Croquetes’ video, told me to wear my pyjamas in the video clip. And so I did. I appear walking around the streets of Porto in my pyjamas, and I started going to concerts like that.‘ PZ admits that he wanted to counteract the ’big production‘ of live concerts. ’I wanted to break with that, and visually, it worked. Now, the whole band wears pyjamas. And there are special moments, like when Sérgio, who plays synthesizers, goes to brush his teeth before going on stage. Some people are already saying that there is a “pyjama mystique”."

On 4 October, a concert party is scheduled to begin in the afternoon and continue into the evening: the programme kicks off at 4 pm with a DJ set by Pedro Tenreiro, followed at 6 pm by the debut concert of Joe Zé, PZ's alter ego who came from Pennsylvania and will present his album Apocalypse Later, and continues at 7 pm with Club Kitten warming up the dance floor in sunset party mode. The highlight is at 9:30 pm, with PZ & Banda Pijama in a show lasting almost two hours, revisiting ‘classics’ such as ‘Croquetes’, ‘Cara de Chewbacca’, “Neura”, and ‘Bestas’, among other surprises.
