"Tearing" with CrUdE

On stage, they are intervention bodies at the service of a revolution. For Ana Clément, Dulce Moreira and Mariana Santos, tearing up conventions will always be one of the aims of their performances. They use their voices, their hands and their whole bodies to "give shape to revolt". "We are whatever we have to be," they say. They're called CrUdE because they "like the sound of the word", but they could be called something else. It was in 2015, on Mariana's turquoise sofa overlooking the Crystal Palace, that this project was born. They are three women who use words "as throwing weapons" and sound "to make everything even more unbearable".

They colour their lips red to emphasise the words they fill their mouths with: "We have Portuguese poets, like Sophia de Mello Breyner and Natália Correia," but also "poets from Portuguese light music, like Ana Malhoa". They also have Bukowski, some WC verses and traditional songs.


During their performance, they play an extract from Natália Correia's novel A Madona (1968), in which they use a hammer and a drill. "They are tools linked to a masculine idea. The text isn't pleasant; the performance doesn't have to be either. The noise exists in opposition to Natália's words and represents the masculine side of oppression," they say.


Freedom is the beginning and end of their repertoire, without sophistry. For those who like cataloguing, they are "cathartic poetic-visceral apocalyptic folk-punk". "We want to enjoy what we do, with this freedom to make our own choices, to follow the paths we think make sense, without thinking too much about how people will read it. Then people will read it, but that's not what worries us," they say. It's this freedom that sometimes "results in completely strange things".


They say they're "mutts, but true": "A mutt doesn't mean you're cheap, a mutt is a mixture."

CrUdE are Ana, Dulce and Mariana and their influences; there are two musicians and multi-instrumentalists and a performer who worked in journalism and does theatre "to read what she never wrote". On stage, they are usually accompanied by D. Antónia (in chalices). They like to invade all kinds of stages. Among the more than two dozen appearances and provocations, they have already taken part in Quintas de Leitura sessions and, in 2022, they were part of the exhibition "Mulheres que Fazem Barulho - Cenas do Rock Português I", at the Casa Comum of the University of Porto, which travelled through the history of Portuguese rock music and the women who have been part of it since the post-revolution period. They were considered "promises of music and of what is to come".


"What's beautiful here is that we don't lock this into one thing," they say. CrUdE wants to intervene, tear up, sing and shout loudly, but also whisper in our ears as they please. "The emotion of freedom can be silent and it can be loud," they say.
