Midnight Zone is an exhibition by Maria Constanza Ferreira that investigates the material and immaterial culture of her ancestral village, Repolão, in Portugal. Initiated in 2022, this multidisciplinary project consists of sculptural objects and video installations. Combining material experimentation, archival research, and personal history, the works unite elements of devotion, spirituality, death, and domesticity found in mystical and religious rituals. Inspired by the deep ocean — a territory that evokes the unknown, loss, and the search for light — the artist explores a suspended space between presence and absence, where traditions and folkloric practices emerge like small bioluminescences, suggesting contact with other realities. Curated by Constança Pupo Cardoso, the exhibition will be on view in two former prison cells of the Portuguese Center of Photography from November 8, 2025 to March 8, 2026, and will be accompanied by a public program including the launch of an artist book in collaboration with Joana Lourencinho Carneiro, funded by Oliveira do Bairro Municipal Council.
This project is supported by the Criatório Program of Ágora – Culture and Sports of Porto, E.M., S.A., an initiative of the Porto Municipal Council.
The exhibition opening will take place on November 8, 2025, from 5 PM to 8 PM, and will be on view at the Portuguese Centre of Photography. Admission is free.
