“The scene displays a particular mind, that of Fernando Pessoa.” Thus began the synopsis of the show that premiered at the Teatro São João, on 7 December 2007. It went on: “Having received the privilege of being present, we hear and see a sequence of voices and characters.” The voices belong to bookkeeper Bernardo Soares, Sensationist poet Álvaro de Campos and bucolic master Alberto Caeiro, but also to female heteronym Maria José, as well as to Ofélia Queirós, the object of the poet’s only known romantic involvement. Ever since that 2007 “triumphal day”, Turismo Infinito [ Infinite Tourism ] became one of the most important events in this theatre’s history. With it, Ricardo Pais opened Pessoa’s rare and infinite universe to a new higher form of tourism. With dramaturgy by António M. Feijó and a scenic apparatus by Manuel Aires Mateus, Turismo Infinito returns to its port of origin. Going back to the beginning ourselves, we could have written: “The scene displays a particular mind, that of Ricardo Pais.”
