Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes, Tropical Malady merges reality and mysticism in a diptych about the dualities of civilisation and nature, love and fear, body and spirit. In the first part of the story, we follow the delicate romance between a soldier and a young villager in a rural area of Thailand — soon to be interrupted by the disappearance of the latter. In a surreal move characteristic of Weerasethakul, the narrative suddenly transports us to the jungle, where the soldier pursues a man-tiger. There he faces his deepest fears and desires in an adventure of self-discovery and transformation.
