Choro Laboratory — Knowledge Passed On is a monthly workshop led by musicians Chico Bastos and Saulo Giovannini, dedicated to learning, practising and sharing the language of Brazilian choro.

Promoted by Clube do Choro - Porto, the laboratory draws on choro's oral tradition of learning, emphasising listening, observation, experimentation and making music together.

Throughout the sessions, participants explore different rhythms from the choro universe, including maxixe, polka, waltz, samba-choro and baião, while working on traditional repertoire, phrasing, ornamentation, group accompaniment, characteristic grooves, active listening and an introduction to improvisation.

Rather than focusing on sheet music or rigid methods, learning takes place primarily through demonstration, repetition and collective experimentation, developing the ear, musical memory and the ability to interact with other musicians.

The laboratory is aimed at musicians with basic knowledge of their instrument — voice, strings, winds, keyboards or percussion - and also welcomes choro enthusiasts interested in discovering this musical universe through active listening and shared musical experience.
