The pond at the Horta Pedagógica at the Quinta do Covelo Education Centre for Sustainability is about 10 years old. This was a wetland that was built from scratch: it was an artificial pond, but today it looks completely naturalised. It is now home to the city's most important population of great crested newts... proof that building a small pond is a good way to promote biodiversity and take advantage of the various ecosystem services it offers.
