After winning the Cadaqués International Orchestra Conducting Competition in 2010, British conductor Andrew Gourlay took over as principal conductor of the Castilla y León Symphony Orchestra and embarked on an international career. On his long-awaited return to Porto, he will present works by the great Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos in national and European premieres. Villa-Lobos' 11th Symphony was written for the 75th anniversary of the Boston Orchestra and dedicated to the legendary conductor Koussevitzky. It aroused critical enthusiasm, as did Dança dos Mosquitos, a descriptive piece with a great sound effect. The programme opens with pieces by renowned Portuguese composers of our time.
