Operação Bangkok I

Ten thousand kilometres to the northwest and six months later, inspired by the anti-government uprisings started by students in the Thai capital in October 1973, an operation known as ‘Operation Bangkok’ was carried out in the still isolated territory of the Algarve, included at the last minute in the days leading up to 25 April 74, with the aim of occupying the transmitters and repeaters at the top of Fóia. The once called Kingdom of the Algarves, the last to form the territory we know today as Portugal, still carries this stigma of being a bastard child. The region is of little interest to the millions of Portuguese who travel there in the summer, beyond its paradisiacal beaches. But a territory is defined, above all, by those who populate and inhabit it. That's why nine artists have been invited who, through their practices and techniques in painting, sculpture, installation, drawing and photography, take us to their territory from different perspectives. Whether through landscape and urban architecture, local traditions, natural and urban sounds, the issue of tourist exploitation, or the region's political, social and environmental concerns.
