An evening banquet of rope
Nawa no utage com NuitdeTokyo

We will look first at the erotic culture of Japan and the social regulation of sex starting in the XVIIth century, then at social regulation and repression and the influence of Chinese thought, looking especially at the Japanese techniques for arrest, persuasion (seme) and torture from the XVIIth to the XIXth century.

In a second part we will examine how these techniques entered the sexual fantasy domain in prints, stories and theater representations, leading us to the XXth century and the emergence of shibari under Itoh Seiu.

In the third part we will look at the immediate post war and the distinction between the rope styles of Minomura Kou and Tsujimura Takeshi, followed by the people they influenced, Nureki Chimuo and Yukimura Haruki on Minomura side, Akechi Denki on Tsujimura side and we will finish in 2005 when Akechi Denki passes away.

Note: We will not examine the style of any living bakushi.

The workshop is intended for any level from absolute beginner, the rope applications will be based on the attendance and the time available. A limited number of applications at the end are of a high level and will require familiarity with dynamic suspension. No one is under any obligation to participate in any application, just watching is perfectly fine.
