*Não Há Condições* (“No Way to Go On”) is a comedy of manners that aims to elevate the national penchant for cunning opportunism—*chico-espertismo*—to the status of an art form, and perhaps even gain it recognition as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
SYNOPSIS
In a modest apartment live Ekaterina, an immigrant from Moldova; her husband, Alex, who is unemployed by conviction; their son, Sandro, who is idle by life philosophy; and Tânia, a determined hustler who sells “original replicas” on social media.
Ekaterina’s days are a constant, frantic scramble between her dysfunctional family and a precarious job as a cleaner at a pretentious contemporary art center.
The fragile balance between a month that drags on too long and a meager paycheck shatters the day a major piece by a renowned visual artist—a broken washbasin—is vandalized.
A rigorous investigation is launched, and Ekaterina is accused of having swept up the shards. As punishment, she is forced to attend an after-hours course on contemporary art appreciation, led by the pretentious director, Dr. Martim—assisted by his twin brother, Célio, a security guard with a murky past.
Fed up, the “underlings” take charge; following the mysterious murder of the director, they return the institution to “the people.”
Amidst manipulation and fraud, chaos takes hold. Yet, just as disaster seems inevitable, the quintessential national talent for improvisation and cunning opportunism transforms this void of ideas into a massive success: they forge a partnership with the MoMA in New York for a “neo-naïf” exhibition of Portuguese folk art.
