Two encounters to give voice to objects, create stories, photographs, zines and a collective exhibition.
If you enjoy stories, objects with a past and creating with your hands, this experience is for you.
Over two three-hour sessions, you will observe objects, imagine biographies, take photographs, write unexpected encounters and, on the second day, build display supports, create an analogue zine and set up a small collective exhibition.
More than simply making pieces, the Laboratory of Impossible Biographies creates space for storytelling, memory, sharing and a playful way of looking at objects and the stories they may carry.
A group experience, with your own trace
There will be individual moments of observation and creation, as well as shared moments of reading, conversation and collective making. Each participant can adapt the process to their own interests.
No previous experience in writing, photography or editing is needed. The techniques will be introduced during the sessions.
This experience is for adults who are curious about objects, storytelling and hands-on creative practices.
What will happen
Total duration: 6 hours, divided into 2 sessions of 3 hours.
Session 1 — Observe, create biographies, connect
We begin by exploring the personal and collective importance of objects.
Each participant receives a wrapped object and observes its materials, marks, age and possible stories, creating an observation sheet.
This is followed by a simple photography session using a mini light box, the writing of an imagined biography and the sharing of texts with the group.
Then, the objects begin to meet: you will write an imaginary encounter between your object and someone else’s, creating new relationships and shared stories.
Session 2 — Assemble, edit, exhibit
In the second session, we move from storytelling to presentation.
You will build a small plinth or box for your object, create an 8-page analogue zine with photographs, texts and collage, and take part in setting up the collective exhibition “Laboratory of Impossible Biographies”.
We finish with an exhibition opening and conversation, sharing impressions and creating a small zine-manifesto with ideas for future projects.
Level of participation
Active participation is encouraged during both sessions: observing, writing, photographing, building and, within your comfort level, sharing some of your creations aloud.
There is no expectation to create a “perfect artwork”. The process, experimentation and sharing are as important as the final result.
What you will learn and take with you
You will explore object biographies, observation sheets, short-form writing, encounter narratives, simple studio photography, exhibition supports and analogue zine-making.
You will take home your observation sheet, texts, photographs, your zine, your contribution to the collective exhibition and practical tools to continue imagining stories for everyday objects.
Materials included
Objects, observation sheets, mini light box, cardboard and tape for plinths or boxes, paper for zines, printed photographs and texts, and collage materials.
What you should bring
Curiosity, availability to take part in both sessions and comfortable clothing. Some collage materials or paint may stain.
Breaks will be agreed at the beginning of each session according to the rhythm of the group.
Language
Portuguese will be the main language, with support in English when needed.
If you have any specific accessibility, comfort or communication needs, please get in touch with us in advance so we can see how we can support you.
