A painter, sculptor, photographer and filmmaker, Manuel Casimiro has developed, since the 1960s, a body of work characterised by experimentation and a reflection on the very nature of art.
In Identidade(s), Manuel Casimiro brings together paintings inspired by the national flags of Portugal and Brazil, drawing on recognisable symbols to propose new interpretations. Through the deconstruction of the flags’ visual elements and their pictorial reorganisation, the artist challenges the notion of identity as an immutable reality, instead presenting it as open to different perspectives and meanings.
As Jacques Derrida defined it, deconstruction involves questioning established meanings, revealing the contradictions and alternative interpretations they may conceal. Rather than simply representing national symbols, these paintings invite active observation and reflection on the relationship between what we see and how we interpret it.
