The exhibition Grammars of Speculation emerges from an ongoing dialogue surrounding the research project “From the Top of the Mountains We Can See Invisible Monuments” (i2ADS). Within the framework of artistic research, the group of artists and researchers speculatively analyzes landscape changes in response to the impact of infrastructure projects, establishing experimental and abstract guidelines to communicate new perspectives on the landscape. For this exhibition, Orlando Vieira Francisco, Ana Sofia Ribeiro, and Felipe Argiles proposed new artistic installation projects based on their fieldwork experience in different areas of northern Portugal. In collaboration with researcher and author Lucie Fortuin, the artists called this in situ series “common territory,” drawing parallels to landscapes of the extractive industry in Arouca, Covas do Barroso, and Valongo. This exhibition was supported by i2ADS - Institute for Research in Art, Design and Society and DGARTES – Directorate-General for the Arts.
