Nova Matéria is a new residency programme resulting from a partnership between Lovers & Lollypops and the Fonoteca Municipal do Porto. Divided into three stages of work and presentation, the project invites artists to create free associations based on initial research in the Fonoteca's collection. The songs of work, intervention, and those linked to the Galician-Portuguese tradition are among its many themes.
For the inaugural edition of Nova Matéria, artists with unique backgrounds and diverse languages were invited: Vasco Lé & Puçanga, Mynda Guevara and Carme López. Despite their differences, they are united by a common affinity: a commitment to continuous research and artistic curiosity, fuelled by years of sound experimentation.
The first public event in the project will feature a presentation by Vasco Lé & Puçanga.
A free scream; a poem like a sonic dagger amidst a percussive cacophony of relentless rhythms, explosions of distorted wind instruments and collective singing. Moving through the worlds of noise, national folklore and free jazz, Vasco Lé uses sound as a weapon to express visceral fury. He recently collaborated with Henrique Apolinário's quartet, Sirte, as a percussionist, and is currently part of the duo Plumber with Francisco Pedro Oliveira.
Puçanga is a singer, songwriter and music producer based in Portugal. The word Puçanga means spell or home remedy. Her strong, exploratory voice merges with the dark, bassy tones of an experimental electronic style. Inspired by folklore and songs of resistance, her music addresses issues of social justice, feminism, and intense emotions. She recently released the single 'Maldigo'.
