Sismógrafo is pleased to present an antipasti detour into João Maria Gusmão’s project Following the White Tiger, curated by Post Brothers, now in a Do It Yourself! format, as an experiment in pedagogical unfolding and cinematic proliferation, in collaboration with first-year students on the Master’s in Film programme at the School of Arts, Portuguese Catholic University.
Over the past year and a half, Gusmão and his film crew have become Polish, to an appropriate degree, acclimatising themselves to the spectral geography and zoological-political idiosyncrasies of Central Europe. Armed with 16 mm film, various cameras and lenses, they gathered images, sometimes moving, sometimes still, composing a syncretic interpretation of the morphogenesis of contemporary historical dilemmas.
The result of this cultural syncretism was first presented at the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw, and will undergo a new inflection at MAAT in Lisbon next March. Between one presentation and the next, the project now takes a detour through Porto, an experimental offshoot born of an exercise in transmission and transformation, in which the cinematic apparatus opens itself to the intervention of new projectionists.
The snipe hunt is on! Come and follow the trail of the white tiger through its successive ideological, optical and phantasmatic manifestations.
