It's one of the most famous stories in literature. Anna Karenin is the wife of an important St. Petersburg minister and aristocrat, Alexei Karenin, and the affectionate mother of little Sergei. On a trip to Moscow, she falls in love with Count Vronski, an elegant cavalry officer. Defying all social conventions, she leaves her husband to live her love to the full. As a result, she loses contact with her son and, later, her own life. But does Tolstoy tell us the whole story? In this adaptation of the famous Russian classic, Catalan director Carme Portaceli rescues Anna Karénina from the love scandal that shocked her peers and puts her on stage to stand trial. This time, the character is determined to tell us everything that really happened, what she felt and what no one else, except perhaps the author, has taken into account. George Steiner wrote: “Anna Karénina dies in the world of the novel; but every time we read the book she is resurrected.” The same happens on a theater stage.
