The first Escuta Ativa [Active Listening] session of the year is taking place in collaboration with Galeria Municipal do porto as part of ‘Recursions: A Cartography of Unfinished Grounds’ – a show that brings together the artists Kiluanji Kia Henda, Flávio Cardoso, Lilianne Kiame and Raul Jorge Gourgel. This listening session will be led by Kalaf Epalanga.
Born in Angola in 1978, he is a musician, writer, poet and chronicler. His poetic journey began in late 1998, when Lisbon was exploring new rhythmic styles and seeking fresh directions for urban music in Portuguese. This led to a series of collaborations and artistic partnerships with artists such as Sara Tavares, Sam The Kid, Type and Nuno Artur Silva. In 2003, he joined forces with producer João Barbosa to form the duo 1Kix Project, and they founded the independent label Enchufada. The label was responsible for releasing the Buraka Som Sistema project, with which Kalaf set out to conquer the world. His literary works include ‘Também os Brancos Sabem Dançar’ [White People Can Dance Too] and ‘O Angolano que Comprou Lisboa (Por Metade do Preço)’ [The Angolan Who Bought Lisbon (For Half the Price)]. Kalaf Epalanga currently lives and works in Berlin.
