Integrated into the “Artistic Crossings” programme of the National Museum Soares dos Reis, this workshop explores the relationship between nature, materials, colour and artistic creation, taking Autumn as a starting point to explore different dyeing processes and pattern-making techniques on fabric.
At this time of year, leaves, bark, fruits, seeds and other natural materials offer their own palette of colours, which will be explored through the preparation of dye baths and the dyeing of natural fibres. Participants will observe how different materials and processes produce distinct colours and shades.
The experience also includes resist-dyeing techniques using fabric folding, tying and compression, exploring shibori and tie-dye principles to create areas of colour, patterns and unexpected effects.
Between natural materials and fabric, the workshop offers a hands-on exploration of colour, bringing together dyeing knowledge and processes of artistic experimentation.
Programme:
Autumn materials and colours: exploration of leaves, bark, fruits, seeds and other natural materials.
Colour extraction: preparation of materials and dye baths.
Preparing the fibres: cotton, linen, silk and wool.
Dyeing: experimentation with dye baths and observation of the different reactions in the fibres.
Resist-dyeing techniques: fabric folding, tying and compression, including shibori and tie-dye techniques.
Colour and pattern: creation of different effects through the interaction between dyeing and resist techniques.
