The May session of the Gallery Talks programme, organised by Galeria Municipal do Porto, will be hosted by Mexican artist Pia Camil, ahead of the opening of her project Sharing, a large-scale textile installation created to take over the GMP courtyard during the warmer months.
Camil lives and works in Acatitlán, in the State of Mexico, and in Mexico City. Her multidisciplinary work encompasses painting, sculpture, performance and large-scale installations, often involving public participation and community-building practices. Taking a feminist and anti-capitalist stance, Camil explores collaboration and the reuse of materials as a way of countering the contradictions of patriarchal and capitalist legacies. By challenging the prevailing values of commodification, Camil explores how art can create alternative spaces for reflection and shared experience. These spaces offer deeply personal and meaningful environments for marginalised individuals and communities who oppose dominant narratives.
