Camilo Ángeles – flautas e eletrónica
João Grilo – piano e eletrónica
João Hasselberg – contrabaixo e eletrónica
Pedro Melo Alves – bateria e eletrónica.
Improvised music quartet that brings together three figures from the new generation of the Portuguese creative scene with the Peruvian flutist Camilo Ángeles, touring Portugal for the first time. The first meeting takes place in New York, in the spring of 2023, when João Grilo and Pedro Melo Alves meet Camilo Ángeles to present his impactful flute and electronic solo. With the paths already on a converging route, surrounded by mutual friends from world improvised music such as Violeta Garcia, Carlos Quebrada, Christian Lillinger, Elias Stemeseder or Camila Nebbia, this previous visit to Portugal was successful. Camilo Ángeles, a question that unfolds between composition, sound design, research, curation and pedagogy, specialized in expanding the flute’s sound spectrum, brings on this tour his exploration of hybrid aesthetics for several unprecedented encounters and open possibilities. In this free-form quartet between this century’s jazz, some delicate chamber music and contemporary electronics, Camilo joins João Grilo on piano and electronics, João Hasselberg on double bass and electronics and Pedro Melo Alves on drums and electronics.
Camilo Ángeles
Flutist, composer, sound artist, researcher, music curator and educator born in Arequipa, Perú, lived several years in Buenos Aires, Argentina, now based in México City. Works with interest on the hybridization of aesthetics, standing outside specific genres, the search for an own aesthetic vision through a deconstructed approach on his own instrument and musical language; the sonorous re- exploration of the flute, a non traditional approach crafted by his own history as a human being, as an immigrant and as Latin American artist. The axis and core of sound in his music is the search for an identity. His music is built of explosive sounds created with different extended techniques, preparations on the flute, microtonal textures, electronic processing and hyper amplification of the flute, altering it sounds to make microscopic air gestures become big waves of sound. He is constantly focussed on the obsessive study of ways to expand the sound spectrum of the flute. In his music, improvisation and composition are procedures used for the same purpose: the construction of a particular identity and space for expression.
Pedro Melo Alves
Portuguese composer and drummer in search for contemporary and meaningful statements through sound. Acoustic and electronic music, composition for small and large ensembles, stage and cinema music, exploratory research of modern percussion and avidness for all the unknown and free side of playing.
