"Maria’s painting has been developing precisely within this threshold: between surface and space, between what is seen and what is perceived, between the physical reality of the work and the spatiality that the gaze adds to it. In her research, the artist herself describes the possibility of a “false gravity,” produced by the rhythm of the composition and by the proximity of the elements to the lower edge of the support. Painting thus ceases to be merely an image and comes to exist also through the experience of the viewer, involving the position of the body, scale, light, and the space that surrounds it."
