“sobre os que voam” (about those who fly) addresses the theme of migration through the presence and visibility of Porto’s migrant community, placing it at the centre of creation. It is a vivid portrait of those who share Porto as their place of arrival, exploring the relationship between past and present, individual and collective, place and time, strangeness and belonging. The performance asks: is it possible to suspend flight in order to exist in freedom?
“sobre os que voam” is an dance creation that explores the theme of migration through collaboration between artists and the migrant community of Bonfim, in a collective creative process.
Based on regular artistic work with the community, and using methods and processes of choreographic creation, the project aims to democratise access to artistic practices and bring migrant and non-migrant communities closer to artistic creation and fruition, contributing to a more fair and inclusive social environment.
Through movement, we build a safe space where we can reflect on new starting points and dissolve borders — in a time where algorithms, misinformation and hate speech tend to isolate us in social bubbles. It is in the construction of this place in community that, with empathy, the challenges of immigration are discussed, experiences, memories, ancestry, cultures and dreams are shared, promoting integration and opening spaces to exist in freedom and without constraints.
