Mahler began composing his Kindertotenlieder in the summer of 1901, after a health problem that made him reflect on death. The birth of his daughter and fears about her fragile health contributed to his writing, by 1904, a work that incorporates the sad poems of Friedrich Rückert, an author who wrote hundreds of Kindertotenlieder following the death of his two children. With a strong emotional impact and unique in the vocal-orchestral repertoire, the song cycle is performed by the prestigious German mezzo-soprano Christel Loetzsch. The evening is rounded off with Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 1, which demonstrates the influence of the artists he admired: Beethoven and Wagner.
