Richard Strauss gave the oboe some of his most beautiful melodies, but it was only at the age of 80 that he decided to dedicate an entire concerto to it. The idea came to him after a conversation with an American soldier and oboist after the Second World War. Thus was born one of the instrument’s essential works, rarely performed due to its technical demands, which require the soloist to play almost uninterruptedly. To meet this challenge, the Symphony Orchestra counts on Lucas Macís, an oboist with a remarkable career who also takes on the role of musical director. The programme is completed with two works by a composer whom Strauss deeply admired: Franz Schubert.
