A return to the brilliant music of Johann Sebastian Bach is inevitable, and his versatility serves as the theme for this late-afternoon programme. The Casa da Música Choir delves into creatively reworked keyboard pieces, revisits two of the most celebrated sacred motets, and concludes this journey with an excerpt from the Mass in B minor, in a lively arrangement made famous by the Swingle Singers. In between, we are treated to Mendelssohn – a key figure in reviving interest in Bach from the 19th century onwards – as well as Sven-David Sandström and José Luís Ferreira, contemporary composers who drew inspiration from Bach’s choral music but managed to recreate its spirit with originality and modern touches.
