Recently winner of the European Union Conducting Competition, conductor José Eduardo Gomes returns to Casa da Música. The programme begins with Fernando Lopes-Graça’s extroverted Marcha festiva (Festive March), before turning to the composer celebrated this season at Casa da Música, Heitor Villa-Lobos, a leading figure in South American musical creation. His Bachianas Brasileiras No. 7 take their starting point in Baroque dances and transport them to the rhythms of Brazilian folklore: the ponteio, a quadrilha caipira and cantares sertanejos ao desafio. The evening is rounded off with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, a remarkable work that describes a battle with the inexorable force of destiny.
