Nuno Côrte-Real stands out as one of the leading figures in Portuguese classical music. His penchant for pushing musical boundaries is clearly evident in this programme, in which he makes his debut conducting the Symphony Orchestra, with two works characterised by diverse musical languages. As soloist in the Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra, he is joined by Sérgio Carolino, one of today’s most acclaimed tuba players. Meanwhile, the invitation to the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra to join him on stage will be an opportunity to immerse oneself in the original world of Alex Paxton, one of the most modern, imaginative and energetic artists of the moment. The Concerto for Jazz Band and Orchestra perfectly illustrates the principles that underpin his artistic output: creating ‘magical soundscapes’ within a radio-like landscape – music made up of melodies and rhythms, inspired by the diverse musical forms that surround us (cinema, television, radio, folk music, jazz, community music, etc.).
