The great composers of the Baroque period were not indifferent to their popular roots. The Baroque Orchestra explores these connections with the rustic world, beginning with a well-known work by Antonio Vivaldi, the Concerto Alla Rustica. Further north, Bach wrote more than two hundred cantatas, almost always on religious themes. The Peasants' Cantata is an exception, so much so that it was premiered in a festive atmosphere, amid fireworks and far from sacred solemnity. It stands out for its simplicity and humorous tone, drawing on popular dance forms and melodies.
